"ROIC and ROCE: quality metrics without the jargon"
Understand return on invested capital and return on capital employed — and how to ask better follow-ups.
Updated 2026-07-16
The idea in one sentence
ROIC and ROCE estimate how effectively a company turns capital into profits. Higher, durable returns often (not always) mark stronger businesses.
ROIC vs ROCE (practical view)
Definitions vary by data provider. Treat them as cousin metrics: both ask whether management allocates capital well. Compare trends and peers more than absolute “magic numbers.”
What to watch
- Level and stability over years
- Changes after acquisitions or heavy investment cycles
- Consistency with margins and free cash flow
Ask Stonks prompts
- “What is ROIC and ROCE for $TICKER over five years?”
- “How do those returns compare with sector peers?”
- “Did returns weaken after a major acquisition?”
Quality metrics are one lens. Pair them with competitive position, valuation, and risk. Not investment advice.
